From 24 – 30 November 2025, the National Chamber Choir „Madrigal – Marin Constantin”, conducted by Anna Ungureanu, returns to Spain after 31 years, with a series of productions in Mérida, Córdoba and Madrid celebrating Romania’s National Day and significant events for Spain and Romania.

The Madrigal Choir meets Spanish audiences and the Romanian community in Spain again at three extraordinary concerts in some of Europe’s most prestigious cultural venues: the Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba (a UNESCO heritage site), Almudena Cathedral and Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid. During the tour, the Romanian Cultural Institute in Madrid opens the tribute exhibition „Marin Constantin 100”, while the Madrigal Choir films a new music video at the Roman Theatre in Mérida, an ancient amphitheatre with a history spanning more than two millennia, part of UNESCO heritage.

The Madrigal tour in Spain is organised with significant support from the Ministry of Culture, at the invitation of the Romanian Cultural Institute in Madrid, alongside the Embassy of Romania in the Kingdom of Spain and the Consulate-General of Romania in Seville. The events mark Romania’s National Day and launch the series of cultural events that will celebrate, in 2026, 145 years of diplomatic relations between Romania and Spain and 20 years of uninterrupted activity by ICR Madrid.

MADRIGAL IN SPAIN – PROGRAMME

❑ 25 November – Mérida
Filming the new Madrigal music video, for the first time ever, at the Roman Theatre in Mérida, an ancient amphitheatre with a history spanning more than two millennia, part of UNESCO heritage. The project continues the Madrigal Choir’s multimedia series „Muzică contemporană românească în spații antice universale”, which brings symbolically significant historic spaces to life through music, creating a dialogue between contemporary Romanian works and world heritage.

❑ 26 November, 19:30 – Córdoba
Extraordinary concert at the Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba, one of the world’s most important sacred buildings. The event marks 1.700 years since the Council of Nicaea (325 AD), when the Creed, a foundational text of Christianity, was adopted. The concert, performed in two parts, brings together Romanian and international sacred works. Admission by RESERVATION.

❑ 27 November, 19:00 – Madrid
Opening of the „Marin Constantin 100” exhibition dedicated to the Marin Constantin Centenary, at the Romanian Cultural Institute in Madrid. The exhibition brings together paintings, sculptures and stage costumes from the Madrigal collection and remains open until 15 January 2026, also forming part of the National Culture Day programme. Some exhibits will be presented at the official 1 December reception organised by the Romanian Embassy in Madrid. Admission by RESERVATION.

❑ 28 November, 20:00 – Madrid
Concert of carols and sacred music at Almudena Cathedral, the seat of the Archdiocese of Madrid. Taking place during the Jubilee Year 2025, a celebration of major importance to the Catholic Church, the concert brings together Romanian and international works dedicated to Christmas in one of Spain’s most important spiritual venues. Admission by RESERVATION – SOLD OUT!

❑ 29 November, 11:00 – Madrid
„Madrigal for Babies” at Círculo de Bellas Artes, an event for babies, expectant mothers and parents, part of the Madrigal Choir’s early education programme. The repertoire is designed to draw on music’s therapeutic effect on early emotional and cognitive development. Admission by RESERVATION.

Throughout its history, the Madrigal Choir has undertaken eight tours in Spain under Maestro Marin Constantin’s direction, becoming a symbol of Romanian-Spanish cultural diplomacy. Its first tour, in 1968, at the International Music Festival in Barcelona, was considered a true artistic revelation, with the Spanish press writing about Madrigal’s „absolute perfection” and „flawless homogeneity” . Further outstanding tours followed in 1970 and the early ’90s, in many cities including Santiago de Compostela, Bilbao, Granada, Madrid, Valencia and Santander.

In 2025, the Madrigal tour in Spain continues the Madrigal Choir’s tradition of international excellence, bringing sacred music, carols and music recommended for babies to audiences in Spain. From the ancient amphitheatres of the capital of the Roman province of Lusitania to Spain’s royal cathedrals, Madrigal carries Romania’s voice into grand spaces where faith, history and art meet in a spirit of unity and spirituality.

The Madrigal tour in Spain is part of the „Marin Constantin 100” anniversary programme, through which the Madrigal Choir celebrates 100 years since the birth of its founder, conductor and composer Marin Constantin, with an extensive series of cultural projects and events throughout 2025. The tour is organised by the National Chamber Choir „Madrigal – Marin Constantin” and the Ministry of Culture, with support from the Romanian Cultural Institute in collaboration with the Embassy of Romania in the Kingdom of Spain, the Romanian Cultural Institute in Madrid,  the Consulate-General of Romania in Seville and the Consulate-General of Romania in Madrid.
