The „Madrigal – Marin Constantin” National Chamber Choir is saddened to announce the death of Professor Dr Noemi Marin, Professor of Rhetoric and Political Discourse at Florida Atlantic University, United States of America.
The daughter of the great conductor and musician Marin Constantin, Noemi Marin was born in Bucharest on 2 December 1954 and died at the age of 68 on 19 June 2023. During her remarkable career, she wrote over 11 volumes and published 400 articles. With a doctorate in rhetoric from the University of Maryland, College Park, Noemi Marin was a professor at Florida Atlantic University, specialising in rhetoric and political discourse in Eastern Europe before and after 1989.
Professor Dr Neomi Marin pursued her academic career primarily in the United States of America, holding important positions including: President of Asociația de Studii Române din America since 2016, Director of the Peace Institute at Florida Atlantic University (2007-2012), Director (a dean-level position) of the School of Communication and Media Studies at the same institution (2011-2014), and Editor of the academic Journal of Literacy and Technology since 2005.
Noemi Marin also authored and edited volumes published in the United States over the last two decades, published numerous articles and chapters in research books, and had over 130 presentations selected for major conferences and conventions in rhetoric and argumentation. Her academic awards included the Florida Atlantic University Research Award in 2009 and the Presidential Leadership Award in 2010, recorded in the University’s Golden Book for her work relating to the Dalai Lama’s visit to Florida Atlantic University in February 2010.
Professor Dr Neomi Marin always maintained close ties with her family and Romania, with a profound sense of belonging instilled by her father from childhood. Mădălin Guruianu, author of the biographical volume „Marea Carte a Madrigalului”, conducted a final interview with Noemi Marin this year. Here we share her recollection of an important family reunion:
„The last concert I attended with Dad, in 2010 – I don’t think you know this – was postponed from 27 February to 15 March. Firstly, because Ion (conductor Ion Marin, editor’s note) had a concert in Copenhagen then, and secondly, because I had personally invited the Dalai Lama to the University in the United States. I was Director of the Peace Institute and we had a whole week of events with over 3000 prominent figures from across America, and I told him: „Dad, I can’t tell the Dalai Lama not to come!”, recalled the late Professor Dr Noemi Marin with emotion.
Her interview, alongside interviews with former Madrigal singers and figures close to the „Madrigal – Marin Constantin” National Chamber Choir, will be included in an impressive anniversary volume to be published this year. It will complement Mădălin Guruianu’s biographical volume „Marea Carte a Madrigalului”, launched in June at the Bookfest 2023 International Book Fair.
May God grant her eternal rest. Our condolences to her grieving family.
