Bucharest, 10 May 2022
On Saturday, 14 May, for the Night of Museums, the Corul Național de Cameră „Madrigal – Marin Constantin” and the Programul Național Cantus Mundi invite visitors through their doors at Aleea Dealul Mitropoliei nr. 11 for OPEN HOUSE MADRIGAL – CANTUS MUNDI.

Housed in one of the most beautiful buildings on Bucharest’s Dealul Mitropoliei, a property nearly 100 years old, the Madrigal Choir’s headquarters will be open to visitors for the Night of Museums, 18:00 – 22:00.
Visitors will discover the monumental villa’s original architecture and spectacular interiors, and explore the history and development of the Madrigal Choir through exhibitions of costumes, photographs, scores and other objects that preserve the celebrated choral ensemble’s memory.

Lighting design illuminating the venerable building on Dealul Mitropoliei will add a visual dimension to the visitor experience, complemented above all by the sound of choral recitals performed LIVE by over 200 children from the choirs of the Programul Național Cantus Mundi.

Vila Sacha Roman, the current headquarters of the Corul Național de Cameră „Madrigal – Marin Constantin” and the Programul Național Cantus Mundi, was designed by the celebrated architect Albert Popper and built in 1924 by the Romanian lawyer and publicist Sacha Silberman Roman (1885 – 1967), a notable figure in interwar Bucharest who also served for a time as Nicolae Titulescu’s secretary.
Its characteristics place the building among the unique villas of early twentieth-century Bucharest, with original architecture that elegantly combines Byzantine, Gothic and Neo-Romanian elements with features inspired by Oltenia’s fortified tower houses.

On 14 May, between 18:00 and 22:00, admission will be free, with visits organised in groups of no more than 10 people.

Since its foundation in 1963 by the conductor Marin Constantin (1925–2011), the Madrigal Choir has given over 4.600 concerts acclaimed around the world, establishing itself as a true national brand. It is one of the world’s benchmarks for chamber choral music, with a repertoire focused on the European Renaissance, Byzantine music and contemporary Romanian and international works. In November 2016, the Corul Naţional de Cameră „Madrigal – Marin Constantin” was officially recognised as an Ambassador of Freedom, Hope and Peace, receiving the „Jean Nussbaum and Eleanor Roosevelt” award at the United Nations Palace in Geneva during the Global Summit on Religion, Peace and Security. After 59 years of uninterrupted activity, the Corul Național de Cameră „Madrigal – Marin Constantin”, a public concert institution of national importance under Romania’s Ministerul Culturii, continues its work in cultural diplomacy as one of Europe’s longest-established and most highly regarded choral ensembles.

Since 2011, the Madrigal Choir has run the Programul Național Cantus Mundi, Romania’s largest programme for children’s social integration through music, initiated by maestro Ion Marin, which currently brings together over 1.680 choirs and over 60.000 children from Romania and the diaspora.
