From 29 March – 13 April 2023, the National Chamber Choir „Madrigal – Marin Constantin” gave 8 performances as part of the „Săptămâna Patimilor” National Easter Tour in Bacău, Iași, Târgu Mureș, Brașov, Sibiu, Cluj-Napoca, Oradea and Bucharest.
The recording of the Extraordinary Performance „Săptămâna Patimilor” in Bucharest will be broadcast on Easter Sunday, 16 April, at 20:00 on Trinitas TV and on Monday, Easter Monday, at 21:00 on Radio Trinitas.

„Săptămâna Patimilor 2023 was one of the most complex tours we have organised in recent years. We travelled 3000 kilometres to be with audiences in 8 cities in record time, and our efforts were rewarded each time by the warmth of our welcome. In every city where we performed, we held the Cantus Mundi promotional tour, through which we established important regional projects alongside capable people from local public administration, inspectorates, teachers and conductors. None of this could have been achieved without the extraordinary Madrigal – Cantus Mundi team, to whom I offer my heartfelt thanks. I also thank our partners, who are always alongside us in our initiatives. A bright and joyful Easter to everyone!” – said Emil Pantelimon, manager of the National Chamber Choir „Madrigal – Marin Constantin” and director of the performance.

The „Săptămâna Patimilor” performance was conducted by Anna Ungureanu – Principal conductor, and Cezar Verlan – Assistant conductor, who included gems of Byzantine and Western European Easter music in the repertoire. Actors Corneliu and Pavel Ulici completed the production’s narrative with sacred and universal texts, while more than 1.300 children from the Cantus Mundi National Programme choirs in Romania and the Republic of Moldova sang alongside the Madrigal Choir in the 8 performances.

„We have reached the end of a national tour full of emotion, light and dedication. For us, the Madrigal Choir’s meetings with audiences and children’s choirs across the country are always a source of joy and gratitude. This is how we can convey hope, love, spirituality and a strong sense of solidarity and community, so needed at this time. We thank everyone!” – Anna Ungureanu, Principal conductor of the National Chamber Choir „Madrigal – Marin Constantin”

The direction and script of the Extraordinary Easter Performance „Săptămâna Patimilor” were by Emil Pantelimon, the sets by Vladimir Turturica and the lighting design by Alin Popa. Dorin Popovici created the video mapping, and Gabriel Scîrlet provided the musical direction.

The „Săptămâna Patimilor” National Tour attracted a large audience of more than 7.000 spectators, and on Saturday, 8 April, the Cluj-Napoca performance was broadcast live on TVR Cultural for viewers across the country. Audiences and lovers of the Madrigal Choir’s music welcomed the „Săptămâna Patimilor” performance with joy:

„A grand, very profound performance. The sets were impressive; the choir left me speechless. This is the first time I have attended a performance like this.” – a female audience member from Brașov

„This is the first time I have attended a Madrigal performance, and it is absolutely magnificent.” – a female audience member from Sibiu

„Tonight’s performance was uplifting and wonderful, with an extraordinary repertoire, with Madrigal as we know it – brilliant – a conductor to match, and the children completing the picture.” – a female audience member from Sibiu

„It was wonderful, uplifting. More spectacular from one year to the next.” – a male audience member from Cluj-Napoca

„God was here with us, without a doubt. I believe Madrigal is a choir of angels descended from heaven, and I think it is the most impressive lesson in art, in performance and in union with God.” – a female audience member from Oradea

The „Săptămâna Patimilor” National Tour is part of the „MADRIGAL 60” anniversary programme, which this year marks 6 decades of uninterrupted activity, musical excellence and diplomacy through culture for the Madrigal Choir, now a symbol of national artistic constancy and of Romania’s cultural significance and image around the world.
