9 concerts, 6.500 spectators and the sound that has heralded Christmas for 60 years
– MADRIGAL –
From 4 – 20 December 2022, the National Chamber Choir „Madrigal – Marin Constantin” gave 9 sold-out performances as part of the „Pe drumul Crăciunului” national tour, which took place in Cluj-Napoca, Târgu Mureș, Timișoara, Craiova, Suceava, Iași and Bucharest. Actors Ofelia Popii and Marius Turdeanu were the Madrigal Choir’s special guests.
„Audiences once again welcomed us with moving enthusiasm across the country. It was a tour de force for us – we travelled almost 3.000 kilometres along „Pe drumul Crăciunului” to meet more than 6.500 spectators. Almost 2.000 children from 50 choirs in the Cantus Mundi National Programme took to the stages alongside the Madrigal Choir, an immense logistical effort for the organising team and the children, who sometimes come from far away to meet their mentors. Our only regret is that we could not add performances to meet the countless requests from those who could no longer find available tickets. This tour was an exceptional start to the Madrigal 60 Years anniversary project!” – said Emil Pantelimon, manager of the National Chamber Choir „Madrigal – Marin Constantin” and director of the performance.
Children from Cantus Mundi choirs in Cluj-Napoca, Târgu Mureș, Timișoara, Craiova, Iași, Bucharest, Galați, Buzău, Pecica, Gurahonț, Argetoaia, Gherla, Turda, Fălticeni, Gura Humorului, Bâcu, Sărmașu, Miroslava and Chișinău – Republic of Moldova sang in the nine „Pe drumul Crăciunului” performances. The participation of children from the Cantus Mundi programme is already a decade-long tradition and, above all, a continuous strengthening of the philosophy of mentoring and social inclusion that Madrigal promotes through its projects.
The „Pe drumul Crăciunului” national tour is the first anniversary project in the series of events included in the „Madrigal 60” programme, which will run throughout 2023, when the National Chamber Choir „Madrigal – Marin Constantin” celebrates 60 years of uninterrupted existence.
Anna Ungureanu, Principal conductor of the National Chamber Choir „Madrigal – Marin Constantin”, and Cezar Verlan, Assistant conductor, prepared a comprehensive repertoire for „Pe drumul Crăciunului”, built around the meaning of Christmas, creating a dynamic emotional interplay between the ensemble’s unique sound and the texts performed by the two guests.
The direction and script of the Extraordinary Performance „Pe drumul Crăciunului” are by Emil Pantelimon, with set design by Vladimir Turturica. Selection of the dramatic texts was by Mădălin Guruianu, with extracts from „Cântarea Cântărilor”, poems by Eugen Jebeleanu, Lucian Blaga and Costache Ioanid and texts by Khaled Hosseini, Saint Tereza de Avila and Paulo Coelho.
The extraordinary performance „Pe drumul Crăciunului” will be broadcast on 24 December at 10:00 on Europa FM radio and can also be watched on Christmas Eve on Romanian Television’s TVR Cultural channel.
