Filmed at Machu Picchu, the „lost city of the Incas” in Peru, the work „Suită corală din Țara Oașului” by composer Dariu Pop, performed by the Madrigal Choir and conducted by Anna Ungureanu, gives the famous citadel new meanings, this time through sound. The viewer is invited to experience sonic architecture, rediscovering this symbol of the Inca Empire, present in cultural consciousness for more than 500 years, through Romanian music.
An important cultural figure and a founder of Romanian education after 1918 (establishing 140 schools in the centre and north-west of the country), Dariu Pop was also a notable folklorist and composer. He composed „Suită corală din Țara Oașului” in 1963, the year it entered the repertoire of the new Madrigal choir at the Bucharest Conservatoire, newly founded by Maestro Marin Constantin.
With both the Madrigal Choir and Maestro Dariu Pop’s work marking 61 years of existence, Romanian music from Țara Oașului was heard in the Madrigal Choir’s performance at an altitude of more than 2.400 metres in the Andes, in a remarkable setting of civilisation and human history.

By bringing together seemingly divergent concepts, the „Muzică contemporană românească în spații antice universale” project, run by the Madrigal Choir, aims to highlight ancient cultural spaces, bring them to life and give them an individual character. Through an unexpected perspective, the Madrigal Choir offers a new way of imagining world heritage, as well as new approaches to seeing, understanding and connecting with symbolic places and sites.
The first episode of the „Muzică contemporană românească în spații antice universale” series – „Sarmizegetusa Regia – Flăcări și roți”, a music video featuring music composed by Corneliu Cezar, was released by the National Chamber Choir „Madrigal – Marin Constantin” and the National Heritage Institute on 15 January 2024, National Culture Day.
